[First, a cheap plug for my blog Senate 2008 Guru: Following the Races.]

Reports the Times-Picayune (emphasis added by me):

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., raised more than $1.2 million in the second quarter, her campaign said Tuesday, doubling her fund-raising pace from six years ago as she attempts to fatten her war chest and scare off potential opponents for her 2008 re-election bid.

Receipts over the past three months leave her with about $2.7 million in her account, the campaign said, in what both major parties predict will be a race costing between $10 million and $15 million.

"We're well on our way to building a strong, well-financed 2008 campaign," Ron Faucheux, Landrieu's campaign chairman, said. "We will continue to accelerate the pace as the election draws near."

NIce job, Mary ... (0.00 / 0)
But you better pick up the pace.  You have under $3 million with 15 months before the election in a race estimated to cost at least $10 million.

Get crackin', girl.

Landrieu Raises Big Bucks! (0.00 / 0)
Senator Landrieu will need every cent she can raise for her campaign next year.  She will likely be facing two serious problems:

1.  A probable Republican Governor, Jindal, with a huge war chest left over from his apparent lack of serious opponents in the Governor's race this year.  Jindal is a step-and-fetch-it for the Republicans and Bush and he will use all his money and influence to beat Landrieu.  Beating Landrieu will get Jindal a pat on the head from Bush which is all Jindal really wants.

2.  But the most serious problem for Landrieu is having to run in the new election system on a ticket with Hillary Clinton.  A big majority of voters in Louisiana are not going to vote for Hillary under any circumstance.  So, Landrieu is going to have to  convince them to vote a split ticket.  Not impossible but difficult.

Still, Mary is a great street fighter and she beat a determined group of politicians (and the Catholic Church)in her last election.  And the 2008 potential Republican candidates - including Kennedy - all appear to be solid, honest guys but weak campaigners.

One possible course of action is for Senator Landrieu to jump into this year's governor's race.  I think she would have an excellent chance to beat Jindal especially since her entry into the race would guarantee that a runoff election would be required and Jindal would likely quickly fade.  I like Landrieu as Senator but I would like her even more as Governor.

Senator Landrieu is going to have to face the Jindal-Bush political machine, eventually.  Why not face them this year as Bush's ratings sink down the toilet?

I think Louisiana Democratic leaders are being very ineffectual with this year's Governors election.  This lack of effort could cause us to end up losing both the Governor's election this year and also the Senate seat next year.

Most Louisianans will not vote for Hillary Clinton under any circumstance (0.00 / 0)
Where's the beef?  In other words, what are you basing this on?  Your intuition?  Or a poll?

Don't misunderestimate Hillary.  She's a smart lady, possibly the smartest person in the field.  She can get more votes in Louisiana than you think.

Hillary (0.00 / 0)
I agree with you about Hillary being a smart lady and probably the smartest person in the field (both parties).  She very well may be elected president.  I will probably vote for her although I favor Gore.

But lets not pretend that Hillary is going to win in Louisiana.  If she gets 40% of the vote, she will be doing well.  Most voters (including most women) in Louisiana are not going to vote for her regardless of who she runs against!  Rush Limbaugh and the conservatives have done a good job of vilifying her in Louisiana.  Rush Limbaugh is king around my area.  On the top radio station - WWL, a solidly right-wing station - Rush Limbaugh updates are presented as news and these "news" updates are often nothing but attacks on Clinton.  Too many of our citizens are susceptible to that sort of phony news.

I hope I am wrong.  Landrieu is a fine senator and, if we lose both her senate seat and the governorship, this state will become the very bastion of ultraconservative politics. Our children may well be taught in school that the earth is flat and that early man fought dinosaurs.

Landieu is an excellent campaigner and her opponents are not nearly as qualified as Landrieu but she is going to have to depend on getting voters to vote a split ballot to overcome the Hillary Clinton drag on the Democratic ticket.

I still think Landrieu's best bet is to challenge Jindal in the Governor's race this year.  She can beat Jindal!
