BREAKING ... LA-06 Robocalls ... UPDATED 2x

I broke the story late Friday night that there were robocalls being made to voters in East Baton Rouge Parish designed to depress voter turnout. The text of the calls was:

"I'm very upset that the National Democratic Party favored Don Cazayoux from New Roads over Michael Jackson. The Democratic Party raised $850,000 for Don Cazayoux which is the only reason Michael Jackson lost in the Democratic runoff. The National and State Democratic Parties always seem to back the white democrat over the black democrat and that's wrong. Alot of us who are supporting Michael Jackson feel the National Democratic Party need to be taught a lesson. We're not voting for Don Cazayoux because we believe Woody Jenkins will be a lot easier to beat in November when Senator Barack Obama is on the ballot. You haven't heard many black elected officials supporting Don Cazayoux. On Saturday we're going to stay home and see how the National Democratic Party do without us."

"Paid for by Friends of Michael Jackson."

On Saturday night, I spoke with various folks within the Louisiana Democratic Party, and they all told me that Michael Jackson denies anything to do with the robocalls. I was also told that he signed an affidavit to that effect.

Earlier today, I received an email from a list-serv email group which stated:

Yesterday morning before I had a chance to vote, I received a robocall from a representative of the Michael Jackson campaign. The call originated from Magnolia Computers of Baton Rouge.

The voice on the phone explained that the State and National Democratic Party had given large amounts of money to the Cazayoux campaign and had left the Jackson campaign to fend for itself. For that reason, they asked that all Democrats refrain from voting and allow Woody Jenkins to win the seat. Why? Because, the voice continued, Michael intends to run for the seat in November and they feel they could then beat Woody at a time when Barack Obama is on the ballot. My caller id showed the number as Magnolia Computer (225-766-7886).

And guess who owns Magnolia Computers LLC? That would be Darrell W. Glasper of Baton Rouge, who was a very controversial BREC chairman. And guess who the only donation Mr. Glasper has made on the federal level within the last 4 years went to? The National Republican Congressional Committee, back in 2005.

Here's where it gets really interesting. If you were to reverse phone look-up that phone number, it is registered to a Raymond Wright of East Baton Rouge. Did Magnolia Computers use a phone number not registered to them to make the phone calls in an attempt to cover it up? Or is Raymond Wright complicit in this sordid mess? Or are the phone records not current? The phone records ARE NOT CURRENT. Only time will tell.

UPDATE: Paul over at TPM Muckraker interviewed Darrell Glasper! He is apparently unapologetic about making the calls. I quote:

"This is America, you can say what you want."

UPDATE II: According to the TPM article I mentioned before, it says that (emphasis added):

"Glasper, an African-American, said that he was an acquaintance and supporter of Jackson's, but that he'd made the calls without Jackson's knowledge and had stopped the calls at Jackson's request. He'd made 10,000 or so by that time, he said."

Pray tell, if he made the calls without Jackson's knowledge, how did Jackson know to ask Mr. Glasper to stop?

for republicans, voter supression. At least I hope it wasn't Jackson.

There were two different calls. (0.00 / 0)
Supporting Jackson.  We received both of them.  One was just reminding you that Jackson was running in the fall.  The second was the one described above. They only went to AA chronic voters.

I thought both were in incredibly poor taste.  Also, Jackson was complicit in this.  Any trial lawyer worth his salt would have sued an entity using his name without permission.  He didn't seem to put up much fuss.

Finally, Ryan, the line of "volunteers" outside Cleo's office weren't "volunteers."  There is a lot of money on the street for election day GOTV and someone has to make it.

Congrats to Caz.

As happy as I am about getting this seat... (0.00 / 0)
We're staring down the barrel of losing it in November.

Don't start worrying about it now.  There's time til November. Cazayoux will ensure the entire district knows who he is by November.

Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin of South Dakota faced the same issue of low turnout in a special election in '04.  So did Ben Chandler in Kentucky.  Yet, they still got re-elected during the Presidential race that fall.  When Bush killed Kerry in both states, no less.

I wasn't talking about the volunteers outside Cleo's office. (0.00 / 0)
I know there's walking around money on election day.  I've worked in NY politics ... and that's all about street money for GOTV.

Jackson signed an affidavit that the Louisiana Democratic Party put together.  There is a lawsuit pending.  It's up to Cazayoux and the national folks to go through with this at this point, I believe.

Bo don't know Didley. . . (0.00 / 0)
But I do know Jackson's t.v. commercial and robocalls when I see/hear them.  I wouldn't assume that he and others (u'hmmm . . . Cleo) were not involved in these calls.   If Jackson were upset, he'd bring his own suit. . .

This suit will go nowhere and election fines are a joke. . .

I wouldn't worry about Caz this fall.  Jackson is not in to win. . . he's in for the buyout. . . The right $ and he'll be off the ballot.

I don't see Cleo's hand in it... (0.00 / 0)
Darlene (his sister) worked her butt off for the campaign - and she most definitely was at the victory party.

Unless there's a brother-sister rivalry thing going on...

Thinking about it some more... (0.00 / 0)
I'm starting to wonder. There seems like 1 of 3 things going on.

1) Jackson had hoped that Cazayoux would lose, and really hadn't planned on a Cazayoux win. And, so far, at present, he's trying to figure out 'what next'.
2) Jackson figured Cazayoux would win, knows he can't win in the fall, but knows he CAN spoil it, and is planning on some sort of power-or-money play in the fall, in exchange for his support of the state and national party. This could well be an effort to rob Fields, or somebody else, of their national influence. Who knows?
3) Jackson genuinely thinks he can win it in the fall.

I want to comment on the subject being passed around. Michael Jackson is angered that he did not win the election. It is untrue that the DCCC poured money into Don Cazayoux's election before the democratic runoff. The DCCC stayed neutral until the democratic candidate emerged. Micheal Jackson was not a strong candidate and the better person won. It is not true that the DCCC only supports white candidates. Why is it that when a black candidate loses, our community calls it racism? I had the unwanted pleasure of recieving a robocall from a group claiming to be "The Friends of Michael Jasckson". The voice message told me that I should not vote, because the democratic party disenfranchised African Americans and that no black community leader supported Don Cazayoux. Well, Cleo Fields supported Don Cazayoux and the last time I seen him, he was black, unless he magically changed his skin color. The message was in bad taste and in poor judgement. Why would any leader prompt a community to not vote, especially the African American community? After our people fought so hard to guarantee us that right, shame on Mr. Glasper
I had the opportunity to work for the Nieghbors for Cazayoux campaign and it was a wonderful experience. I met many new people, made a few new friends, and learned that it takes hard work to organize a campaign.

Congrats to Don, he will serve us well.

I want to invite you to the Drinking Liberally event tomorrow night at Chelsea's, it is an event aimed at bringing together Democrats just to talk.  There is no organizing, no politicking, just talking about politics, and whatever else strikes our fancy.  And, drinking is not required ... you can drink pop if you want.

Hope to see you there!

Glasper may be the front man, but . . . (0.00 / 0)
it was Lane Grigsby & Pat Bergeron.

The best scenario dor Don is Obama wins the nomination, (0.00 / 0)
Don endorses Obama, Obama endorses Don. The AA vote would then fairly certain go with the Dem ticket.
Don hurts himself w/o an endorsement and allows Jackson to be a spoiler.
Don is not going to lose any whites by an endorsement.

Democrats never agree on anything, that's why they're Democrats. If they agreed with each other, they would be Republicans.

I don't think Jackson's run this Fall will hurt Don much IF (0.00 / 0)
he is supporting Obama. Barack would have to support the incumbent Democrat over Jackson.
If Clinton should get the nomination we're screwed and it takes a miracle for Cong. Cazayoux to serve his first full term, IMO.

I don't Glasper is even a Democrat! (0.00 / 0)
Where was he when Jackson needed him 3 months ago.

Glasper was a front for Grigsby & Bergeron.
