LA-SEN: The State of GOP Opposition to Mary Landrieu

[First, a cheap plug for my blog Senate 2008 Guru: Following the Races.]

While the 2007 Louisiana Gubernatorial race and 2008 Presidential speculation are probably gaining the bulk of the attention, the 2008 Senate race in Louisiana should be interesting.  Mary Landrieu is regarded as the most vulnerable Democrat of the cycle across the country.  So, what is the current state of the NRSC and LA-GOP finding an opponent for her?

Hmmmm... Bobby Jindal is running for Governor. GOP Congressmen Charles Boustany and Jim McCrery have both taken their names out of the running. GOP Congressman Richard Baker has a whopping $66,000 cash-on-hand. And Jay Dardenne, who is already polling significantly behind the "vulnerable" Landrieu, is embarrassing himself. In fact, the only Republicans who have demonstrated any interest are Woody Jenkins and Suzanne Haik Terrell, the two Republicans Landrieu has already defeated.

It's like the LA-GOP and NRSC are standing at a microphone mumbling, "Is this thing on?"  While there is still almost 18 months until Election Day 2008, Republican options are slimming awful quickly.

Thank you for joining us, Senate Guru. (0.00 / 0)
Our Senators are somewhat lucky, as the off year state elections make it impossible for the state Parties to coordinate opposition to incumbents with state elections occuring one year before any Senate race.  Everyone will have to wait until October or November for the GOP to announce their candidate(s).  The new closed primary system for federal elections will also make this race difficult to read, as both sides will have to adjust to the new election structure.

Surely, they'll find someone (0.00 / 0)
and it may yet be Jay Dardenne or Richard Baker.  But Dardenne ain't polling well (and he's taken to some rather embarrassing instances, which DK has been goodly enough to report on) and Baker ain't fundraising like he's planning a statewide bid.  It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

(In the meantime, it would certainly be appreciated, if you so saw fit, if Senate 2008 Guru was added to the National Blogs blogroll.  Mary Landrieu's re-election bid will certainly be one of the most closely watched races both on that blog and nationally.)

The plan is to recruit John Kennedy to switch parties (0.00 / 0)
I can confirm that this is being discussed as the number one option at very high levels in the state GOP-- ahead of rallying around Dardenne, even.
