New Orleans Mayor Nagin to Run for Governor?

(This needs time to breathe ... so I'm bumping it up. - promoted by ryan)

I've been hearing rumors for a couple of weeks now that New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin is considering running for Governor. I finally found a news outlet that confirms this rumor, thanks to freelance journalist Jason Berry, who appeared on Informed Sources last night to predict that Nagin will run for Governor. Hat tip to Library Chronicles.

As an aside, is this Jason Berry the author of Amazing Grace, an account of Charles Evers' run for Governor in Mississippi back in 1972?

But back to the issue at hand - Ray Nagin running for Governor of Louisiana. This makes sense, as it highlights one of the few things that Nagin is good at - holding grudges.

ryan :: New Orleans Mayor Nagin to Run for Governor?
Back during the 2003 Governor's race, Nagin backed Jindal, even against a fellow Democrat - Governor Kathleen Blanco - in the runoff. Apparently, there was a deal regarding the endorsement ... Jindal was to back Nagin in his re-election bid in '06.

But Jindal stayed silent, not having the guts to take a public stand, fearing that a public endorsement of Nagin would come back to haunt him with his conservative base in this year's Governor's race.

And that's why Nagin WANTS to get in this race. He wants to get back at "Bobby" Jindal by beating him in the Governor's race. Let's game plan this scenario the way Nagin's supporters are probably doing at this time ...

Jindal gets an overwhelming majority of the Republican vote as the only serious Republican in the race. Boasso and Foster Campbell split the white Democratic vote, leaving Nagin with the overwhelming majority of the African-American vote, putting him in the runoff against Jindal, as it did for Senator Cleo Fields and Rep. William Jefferson against former Governor Mike Foster.

Such a scenario ... Jindal v. Nagin ... as scary as that seems, may actually produce a "Democratic" victory according to Nagin's supporters, if the following happens:

A large portion of white voters upstate stay home, as they don't want to vote for either candidate. Nagin will get the entirety of the black vote, Jindal will get the conservative Christian white vote. The question here is where do the rest of white voters throughout the rest of the state go?

Nagin, by getting in the race, would be betting that a majority of the white vote that's not part of the Christian Coalition block comes out and votes for him, thereby giving him the Governorship.

I don't believe for a minute that Nagin can beat Jindal, mainly because I believe that the upstate white voters will come out and vote for Jindal in a Jindal-Nagin match-up, as I have no doubt that the Republican Party will cater to the fears of upstate voters.

What say you?

Nagin for Governor (0.00 / 0)
Just when I had about given up on the governor's race because the major Democrats are opting out of the race, Mayor Nagin's name is put forward as a possible candidate.

I question that Nagin will run but I hope he does.  It would virtually guarantee a runoff between Jindal and a Democrat.  Jindal will begin to lose strength in a runoff.

Still, I think Jindal is the overwhelming favorite to win the governor's race unless Blanco, Breaux, Melancon, or Ieuobe run.  I just can't see Campbell getting over 20% of the vote and Boasso 10%.  Georges is a wild card with all his money but, so far, he has no issues of any consequence.  I look for him to get less than 5 %.  Chris John looked so bad in the 2002 senate race, I can't see him running.

So, Nagin would certainly liven up what is now a dull race.  His entry might encourage Blance to reenter the race since a runoff would be assured.

Go for it, Mayor Nagin!  It is time to bring Jindal down to his true size!

Oh please, Nagin doesn't WANT to "get back" at Bobby.  That's not a motivator.  Certainly not enough of a motivator for him to run some quixotian, underfunded campaign at the last minute. If Jindal had endorsed him at the last minute, that might've had a "backlash" effect, and thrown more black support to Landrieu. (Plus, Jindal knew an endorsement would later tarnish his reputation for "good judgment" amongst conservatives.)

Nagin's disapproval rating is over 60%-- in NEW ORLEANS.  How's he gonna run competitively in the state?  The man's a joke; he's not a Dem who we want running for higher office. (Obviously, he's planning to run for something in the future-- perhaps governor-- but not this year.  No way.)

A payoff of a different sort (0.00 / 0)
If Nagin gets in the race, its not to get back at Jindal, it to get Jindal elected.  Many of the big money GOPers that helped Nagin defeat Mitch in the mayor's race are now backing Jindal in the Guv race. Their idea in putting Nagin is the Guv race is to pull down black support from Campbell, thereby knocking Campbell down to 3rd and giving Jindal a run-off opponent he can beat, ie the most hated man in LA - Nagin.  Nagin would be complicit in this because he would stand to make a lot of money and he's never really been much of a Dem to begin with.  In fact, he changed parties from Rep to Dem right before he ran for mayor.  This is the same play Jefferson made in  95 when he ran against Mike Foster and kept any other Dem with a chance of winning out of the race.

This is my great fear ... (0.00 / 0)
It's also why I put "Democratic" up there.  I've never really considered him a Democrat, but a corporatist who wants to cleanse New Orleans for the jet-set folks.

And if he was a Democrat, why would he support Bush in both elections?  Jindal against Blanco?  I have friends who swear he's a Democrat, and when I ask them those questions, they have no credible answer.

"I was against NAFTA and CAFTA, and I'll be against SHAFTA."
