LA-02 and SD-03: Jefferson LOSES ... Morrell wins.

With 492 precincts in this district, we'll likely not be done anytime soon.  The New Orleans precincts that Jefferson will be counting on to push him over the top will likely not come in until 10 PM CST.

With all 492 in:

Candidate Votes % of Vote
Joseph Cao (R) 33,122 50%
Bill Jefferson (D) 31,296 47%
Malik Rahim (G) 1,880 3%

There are still 101 precincts to come in from New Orleans itself.  The newspapers and CNN are calling it for Cao.  Holy crap, a wingnut Republican just won in a majority black district.  We're gonna have no Democratic representation in the House, save for Charlie Melancon.

And for the Third District State Senate seat, there are 87 precincts to report.  With 78 of 106 in:

Candidate Votes % of Vote
J.P. Morrell 4,370 55%
Shawn Barney 3,360 45%

Cao might not be so bad... (0.00 / 0)
Ryan, you're right that he's a repuglican, but I have to say that I think he's better than most of them.  I saw him and Moreno (and the Libertarian) at a candidate forum at Tulane (Dollar Bill refused to come talk to us uppity uptown liberals).  Moreno was completely predictable, spitting out TV sound bite answers.  She spent 1/2 the time looking at her blackberry while others were talking (that's just f'in rude during a debate).  Then she ended up leaving 45 minutes into a two hour debate, without explaining to the audience why ("Sorry folks, something important's come up - I gotta run.  Bye.")

Cao was very contemplative and articulate.  He was a republican on economy and taxation.  But when asked about immigration he gave a very thoughtful and humanitarian response, then proceeded to criticize Moreno for not being more substantive!  She ignored him - I think she thought she was a shoe-in.  He's 100% pro-immigration reform in a liberal direction.  He also gave a very "green" response to environmental questions and referred to creation-care.  He's a Jesuit seminarian, so go figure.  He was also all about spending federal funds on storm defense and wetlands restoration.

I don't know how he aligned himself before the race - he was a registered independent until getting into this race.  What Pelosi & Hoyer should do is go to him and ask him to cross the aisle!

Finally - I went fishing on Sunday in the Rigolettes, and we drove through the big NO East Vietnamese community.  Those folks out there have been pretty much w/o representation for a lot longer than the rest of the city - and I think it really means a lot to them to have a Vietnamese man elected for obvious reasons.

So, all in all a very interesting outcome to a long, weird trip down the path of Dollar Bill's nightmarish personal failure and collapse.  Jesus, imagine if he had won then somehow beat the rap on him?  He's whipped now and won't be back.

It would be interesting to see if they could turn him.  He'll definitely get beat by a black democrat in 2010 if he stays a republican, so if he's smart, he'll cross the aisle.  It's his one chance to get re-elected. When I saw him at that debate I told him he didn't sound like a republican and was in the wrong party - he smiled and said nothing.

Hey - sorry I didn't post a diary about this race, but like everyone else, I thought that Jefferson would cruise.  So, I didn't take the race very seriously.

He's not gonna flip ... (0.00 / 0)
Even if he does, he will LOSE.  He does not support Democratic ideas on the economy or taxation.  There is no way in hell Democrats will support him if he doesn't agree with Democratic ideas on those two issues.

And ANYTHING he "gets done" for this district will be credited to Obama before it's credited to Cao.  Matter of fact, if I was advising the President-elect, I would advise him to speak about how he wanted whatever was put in any bills for New Orleans, and hold a press conference down here announcing them.
