Oil Drilling

LA-06: Cassidy Uses Hurricane As A Prop

by: ryan

The Republican candidate for Congress in LA-06 this time around is a State Senator named Bill Cassidy ... who looks a little like George McFly. Anyway, he just released an ad that ignores what folks in the Baton Rouge metro region experienced during Hurricane Gustav:

This ad raises so MANY questions that I just have to list them all. First, questions that were triggered while watching the ad:

  • What day did he shoot this ad?
  • Did he have power when he shot the ad?
  • Was it actually raining or did he fake the rain?
  • If it was shot during Gustav, why doesn't he mention the challenges Louisianans are facing and the recovery ahead?
  • If it wasn't shot during Gustav, why is he pretending it was?
  • How did he find the time to film a partisan political campaign commercial while Baton Rouge was experiencing the worst storm in its history?

Now, the issue-oriented questions:

I just wonder how the constituents in his State Senate district and the folks he hopes to represent in LA-06 are going to feel about his using the "hurricane" as a backdrop for an ad where he launches into generic political talking points ...

LA-06: Cazayoux's "Right Out There"

by: ryan

Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 13:43:26 PM CDT

Don just released an ad four hours ago about his commitment to achieving energy independence:

While I still think that drilling is not worth our time, mainly because it will take at least 7 years for any new drilling anywhere in the world to yield any oil, I appreciate the fact that Don is open to the idea of alternative energy, which you can't say about most Republicans, or I suspect, most Louisianans.

LA-06: New Radio Ad Supporting Cazayoux

by: ryan

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 06:00:00 AM CDT

The DCCC has stepped up with a radio ad answering the false attacks made by Freedoms Watch, a shadowy Washington group with ties to Karl Rove and President Bush's Rangers.

Since they lost the special election in LA-06 a few months ago, they've been plotting their strategy for domination in LA-06. Unfortunately, it involves lying to the people of LA-06 about Don's record.

While I don't agree that more oil drilling is the answer, Don does. He supports more drilling in the Gulf and in Alaska. But he also supports investing more in renewable energy, so we can end our nation's addiction to Saudi oil. Here's the DCCC's response to Freedoms Watch's outright lies:

LA-01: Scalise Is Having Money Troubles

by: ryan

Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 06:00:00 AM CDT

I hadn't thought of this, but a press release put out by Jim Harlan's campaign makes me wonder ... if the reason that Steve Scalise is on a Congressional junket to Alaska to publicize the Republican dream of drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge is because he is looking to raise some dough from the oil interests.

After all, he's got some $211,000 in the bank, but he also has over $192,000 in debts to settle, which means that he's got a mere $19,000 to play with right now. That $192,000 is not personal funds that he donated to his campaign, but money he owes to vendors.

The Harlan campaign wants to know why Scalise has to go all the way to Alaska on taxpayer money when he can question the oil companies right here in Louisiana about why they are not drilling on the oil leases they currently have in the western half of the Gulf of Mexico?

LA-01: Scalise Shilling For Big Oil

by: ryan

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 10:32:49 AM CDT

This past weekend's edition of the Times Picayune's On The Hill has this little blurb about our drunken oil Congressman from LA-01, Steve Scalise:

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, is joining nine other House freshmen on a trip to Alaska this weekend to examine the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which he and other Republicans want to open to oil exploration. The freshmen are being led by House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio. Some Democrats have said the plan will do nothing to lower prices because it would be a long time before any oil flowed, but Scalise said he thinks oil development could begin in as soon as three years.

Never mind that oil industry's own trade group stated:

Opening America's coastal waters to oil drilling, as John McCain urged in an address Tuesday, is unlikely to provide Americans with more oil for at least seven to 10 years. That's the estimate from the American Petroleum Institute, the oil industry trade group.

Never mind that WeCanSolveIt Chairman Al Gore outlined the current crisis we face so much better than anyone else out there in a speech to Netroots Nation last weekend:
